Towards a public European animal health study repository – proposal to stimulate a discussion

Jelle Stans.

Abstract
Clinical trials are the golden standard to test the efficacy and safety of interventions in veterinary medicine. Despite the fact that veterinary clinical trials have increased in importance, there are still several challenges that need to be overcome such as inadequate reporting and recruitment problems. To tackle these issues, public information about veterinary clinical trials is very important. In the United States, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) maintains the AVMA Animal Health Studies Database (AAHSD). This database was specifically designed for researchers conducting prospective veterinary studies, but can also be used by owners to find studies for which their pet may be eligible. Within Europe, there is currently no comprehensive database that includes scientific health studies conducted in companion animals. Therefore, this letter aims to describe the potential first steps in the development of a very basic repository that can act as a starting point for a European-wide database that mirrors the AAHSD and could function as a veterinary counterpart to the EU Clinical Trials Register for human trials as an end goal. Additionally, it aims to start a conversation about the need, characteristics and feasibility of such a potential database.

Key words: European animal health, Repository, Proposal.
